Women's History Month 2019 Profile: Desanka Fasiska

Desanka Fasiska, Designer/Ceramicist

How would your peers describe your personality?

The epitome of an extroverted introvert.

When did you consider yourself a success? How did this make you feel?

When it comes to my career it's all about the small victories - the daily and project based accomplishments. For better or worse, I don't know if my personality allows me to ever feel fully successful because I'm always my biggest critic and pushing for more from myself. However, this might be cheesy, but it's my truth, the most accomplished I have ever felt was giving birth. It was the raddest thing I've ever done. I equate it to training for a marathon for the better part of a year then running the race and winning.

What is the biggest challenge you have come across in your career and how did you handle this?

My career challenges... where do I start?! Firstly, I am not cut out to work in a 9 to 5 corporate environment. Which sucks because I would LOVE the reliability and security that a "real job" provides. But alas, I work better autonomously so being an entrepreneur has always been my best option. But, as anyone who has ever run their own, self-funded, solo-venture knows it's HARD. It's non-stop stressful in all the ways you can imagine. Add to that the juggling act of being a mom. Yeah it's a challenge.

What do you do to keep yourself motivated and interested in your work?

I worry about money lol.

What are you most proud of?

I'm most proud of my ability to just keep going with my business even when it gets daunting - and that I am still able to somehow, never stop coming up with creative ideas that I actually execute.

What inspired you when you were younger?

Color, shape, abstract art, fashion and nature have always been my biggest inspirations.

What nail color makes you feel most confident?

I love an orange red!

What is a piece of advice you would give to young women?

Any answer I give will sound a bit trite but ok, 3 things:

  1. Knowledge is power
  2. Try to find your center as early on as possible and navigate from there.
  3. Be kind , listen hard & always do better

oh, a 4th thing... learn how to manage your money!
