Women's History Month 2019 Profile: Ayde Merida

Ayde Merida, Director of Procurement at ORLY International

How would your peers describe your personality?

They would tell you that I am trustworthy, level headed, loyal, caring, and fun.  That I can be counted on to aid when needed, they can also tell you I possess some pretty creative problem solving skills.

When did you consider yourself a success? How did this make you feel?

Success simply means accomplishing what you set out to do within the parameters you specify, whether they be time, money or learning. Once I delivered my first significant launch and rebranding initiative I felt relieved, ecstatic, and satisfied.

What is the biggest challenge you have come across in your career and how did you handle this?

Early on in my career and due to my inexperience, I over promised and did not deliver on my commitment. That caused a snowball effect that single handedly canceled a project. Since then I have learned to plan for unforeseen events or setbacks that can derail any given deadline.

What do you do to keep yourself motivated and interested in your work?

I don’t think of it as work, once I have made the choice to do something, I try not to think so much of how difficult or frustrating or impossible it may be; I just think about how good it must feel or how proud I might be to have done that. I like to celebrate wins.

What are you most proud of?

I most proud of my two daughters, who are growing up to be amazing young women.

What inspired you when you were younger?

My dad, his love and support and hard work to raise, shelter, educate, push and nurture me is commendable and I know that I am lucky to have him. And music, great songs move people. The creativity and talent it takes to make music amazes me.

What nail color makes you feel most confident?

Red.

What is a piece of advice you would give to young women?

You have to push for your own opportunities and not be afraid to ask for what you want. Find something you are passionate about. Speak up, share ideas and help shape what you want your future to be. Follow your passion and ignore negativity.
